Softdesk 7.x and 8.0

How is the size of an arrowhead (or other end marker) associated with a Softdesk leader changed?

The size of the arrowhead (or other end marker) associated with Softdesk leaders is controlled by the Annotation Plot Size. You can access the Annotation Plot Size by selecting Project Settings from the File or AEC pull-down menu. Choose the Annotation button in the Project Settings dialog box. In Annotation Settings, change the Annotation Plot Size to a desired size for leader arrowheads. Changing the Annotation Plot Size will affect the size of the arrowhead of Softdesk leaders only; it will not affect text or the length of Softdesk leaders.

NOTE: If there are existing Softdesk leaders in a drawing and the Annotation Plot Size is changed, it will not affect any existing Softdesk leaders. It will only affect Softdesk leaders created after the Annotation Plot Size is changed.

How can I change the text height of text that is associated with Softdesk leaders?

Text associated with Softdesk leaders is controlled by the Text Style Settings in Project Settings.

By default, the text style for text associated with Softdesk leaders is ANNTEXT (found in Project Settings). Before changing the text height, you need to first determine which text style is used. To do this, use the AutoCAD LIST command. Then go to Project Settings from either the File or AEC pull-down menus. In the Project Settings dialog box, choose the Text Styles button. Select ANNTEXT (if the text uses this style). Change the value for height as necessary to produce the desired text height. Changing the height will affect all text associated with Softdesk leaders that exist in the drawing as well as any new Softdesk leaders created after this point.

Softdesk 8.0

Why are the Softdesk dimensioning commands that were available through the pull-down menus in Softdesk 7.5 no longer available in Softdesk 8.0?

Softdesk 8.0 dimensioning commands have been removed from the pull-down menu structure and can only be accessed through command line macros such as SDHO, SDVE, and so on. Use the MH macro to see a complete list of available Softdesk macros.

Why am I not given the option to create a new profile when installing the Softdesk 8.0 Building Services?

This is because the Building Services CD does not include AEC-Tools that are necessary for the building services products to function. The installation process is designed to make you select an existing profile to ensure that AEC-Tools have been previously installed. You must install AEC-Tools from another CD before installing from the Building Services CD.

When opening a drawing in Softdesk 8.0, the menu structure does not change to the last menu structure associated with that drawing. Why?

This is because AutoCAD R14 no longer uses the "Use Menu In Header" option that allows you to select how menus are retained. In R14, the menu will not automatically change when opening different drawings. You will need to manually change the menu structure through either the MENULOAD command or Softdesk Programs commands. You can also change menus through AutoCAD Profiles, which allow you to associate different menu structures with different profiles.

Why isn’t Automatic Initialization included in Softdesk 8.0 preferences?

Softdesk has removed this function from the Softdesk 8.0 release. Initialization will occur after the first Softdesk command is selected in any of the Softdesk 8.0 products.

The merge menu functionality that was available in Softdesk 7.5 is no longer available in Softdesk 8.0. Why?

The method used for loading menus in Softdesk 8.0 has changed, and no longer requires stub.mnu files, or allows you the ability to merge these files. Instead, the AutoCAD MENULOAD command is used to append the Softdesk menus to the AutoCAD menu but does not alter the AutoCAD menu in any way. Any modifications or menu maintenance should now be performed through the MENULOAD command and not through the MENU command.

How are customized menus from a previous version retained in Softdesk 8.0?

It is recommended you create a custom.mnu file in order to save any custom pull-down menus or commands. Then use the MENULOAD command to load your custom menus.
You can also manually enter your custom menu routines into any of the existing menu files through a text editor, such as Notepad. It is strongly recommended that you first make a backup copy of any menu files before editing these files.

Why is the Softdesk Building Base product that was available in Softdesk 7.5 no longer available in Softdesk 8.0?

Although Building Base is no longer its own separate module, the functionality of Building Base has been integrated into each of the Building Services programs (Electrical, HVAC, Piping, & Plumbing).

I was able to enter an equal sign (=) at the command line to set up a temporary drawing scale in Softdesk 7.5. Why does the message "Unknown Command "=" display if I enter this in Softdesk 8.0?

The functionality of the temporary drawing scale is still available in Softdesk 8, but the command to access this function has been changed from = to GS (Global Scale). Product Support recommends using the MH macro to see a list of available Softdesk 8.0 macros.

Why does the message "string variable is not long enough for string" display after entering the Softdesk Registration Information when installing Softdesk 8.0 products?

You will see this message if you are installing the Softdesk 8.0 products on a computer that does not have AutoCAD R14 installed, or if a beta version of AutoCAD R14 was installed. Softdesk 8.0 products require that a complete shipping version of AutoCAD R14 is installed on the computer, and that it is properly functioning.

After installing Softdesk 8.0 on a Windows NT computer, individual logged-in users do not have a Softdesk shortcut nor do they have a profile created for Softdesk products. Why?

In a Windows NT environment, the Softdesk 8.0 installation must be performed while logged in as Administrator. After the installation process, each individual logged-in user will have a Softdesk 8 Setup routine found in the Start menu under Programs. Each individual logged-in user will need to run the Softdesk 8 Setup routine to create an individualized profile for that particular user. This enables each user in a Windows NT environment to have their own profile so that they can maintain their own menu and toolbar structures.

The daystamp inserted into a drawing in Softdesk 8.0 no longer contains the directory path and file name as it did in Softdesk 7.5.

The name of the current drawing in AutoCAD R14 is stored in the DWGNAME system variable. In AutoCAD R13, this system variable would include the path to the drawing file so that the daystamp would display the path and file name. In AutoCAD R14, the DWGNAME variable was altered to contain only the drawing name. A separate system variable, DWGPREFIX, now saves the path to the drawing file. Because of this change, only the drawing name is displayed when using the Softdesk 8.0 daystamp routine.

How can I restore the Softdesk menu structure if I manually replaced the menus by using the AutoCAD menu command in Softdesk 8.0?

To restore the Softdesk menu structure, use the AutoCAD MENULOAD command. Enter MENULOAD on the command line to display the Menu Customization dialog box. Choose the Browse button to locate the aec.mnu file located in the \SDSK\PROGRAMS subdirectory. After the path to the aec.mnu file is displayed in the file name section of the dialog box, choose the Load button to see the AEC menu in the Menu Group. Then select the Menu Bar tab, and change the Menu Group from ACAD to AEC.

The AEC menu will be the only available menu option. Highlight AEC, and choose the Insert button to add the AEC pull-down to the available AutoCAD pull-down menus. After the AEC menu is appended to the AutoCAD menu, it is recommended you use the Softdesk Programs routine to change the current Softdesk menu.

If you have already initialized the Softdesk environment during this drawing session, it is recommended you use the AEC macro. Enter AEC on the command line to automatically load the menus for AutoCAD, AEC, and the last Softdesk product used before the menu structure was changed. The AEC macro will not work if Softdesk has not been previously initialized for the current drawing.

NOTE: It is recommended you always use the MENULOAD command in Softdesk 8.0. Do not use the MENU command because it will only load a single menu file, and any existing loaded menus will be removed making it necessary to reload them.

The Softdesk 8.0 CD does not contain a .pdf file for each module. Where are the reference manuals available for the other modules?

The Softdesk 8.0 CD contains a .pdf file for each of the modules included on the CD except for the following: AEC-Tools, Auto-Architect, COGO, DTM, and Earthworks. Each of these modules have online help files that are installed during the Softdesk installation process. These online help files are available through the Start menu in the Softdesk 8 program group. Another way to access these online help files is to press the F1 key while a pull-down command associated with any of these modules is highlighted.
